Jasper County Airport will host an Aviation Career Day on Friday, May 12, 2017, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm central. The event is free to the public and is aimed at introducing local students to aviation careers. The airport reached out to local educators from Jasper and surrounding counties. So far, over 600 students in addition to dozens of parents and volunteers are scheduled to attend.

Bus and vehicle parking will be across the street at the Fairgrounds. Jasper County Sheriff will help with traffic control.

Displays will be set-up at 5 different stations at the airport. Arriving students will be split into 5 groups with each group attending a station. The groups will switch stations every 20-30 minutes, depending on the station.

Station 1- Technical

This station will have FAA, TSA, INDot, Airport Management, and ATC representatives.

Station 2- General Aviation/Flight

This station will have 2 air ambulance operators as well as pipeline patrol, aircraft manufacturing, unmanned aerial systems, flight training, and aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) representatives.

Station 3- Maintenance

This station will focus on aircraft maintenance.

Station 4- Displays/Demonstrations

This station will explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) activities relating to aviation. At this station, the Aircraft Owners and Pilot’s Association (AOPA) will be present with “Yellow Bird”, a modernized Cessna 150.

Station 5- Military Aviation

The Guard will display a Blackhawk Helicopter and will discuss military aviation careers.

Without volunteers, such an event could not happen. Jasper County Airport is very fortunate to have numerous aviation industry professionals willing to participate. Several participants will also feature static displays. Local volunteers will help keep students safe.

Although the event is intended to teach local students about aviation careers, anyone interested in learning about aviation is welcome. Community outreach is very important to the airport, which is currently working on bolstering aviation education and activities within the community. More to come soon!
